Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(A.D.H.D)

Introduction to ADHD

A.D.H.D is one of the most common neurodevelopment disorders of childhood and can persist into adulthood.

There are three different ways ADHD presents itself, depending on which types of symptoms are strongest in the individual:

  • Predominantly Inattentive Presentation
  • Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation
  • Combined Presentation

Current research has shown that ADHD frequently runs in families. Studies are ongoing in an effort to find better ways to manage and reduce the chances of a person having ADHD.

Symptoms

ADHD symptoms can be mild, moderate, or severe, and can vary depending on the type of ADHD disorder.

  • Procrastination
  • Lack of Focus
  • Forgetfulness
  • Distraction
  • Fidgeting
  • Restlessness
  • Talking excessively to impatience
  • Blurting
  • Interruption

Diagnosis

ADHD screening, also called an ADHD test, helps find out if you or your child has ADHD. Early diagnosis and treatment can help reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.

There is no single test used to diagnose ADHD. Experts diagnose ADHD when symptoms impact a person’s ability to function and they’ve shown some or all of the symptoms on a regular basis for more than 6 months and in more than one setting. Your health care provider may order an ADHD test if you or your child has symptoms of the disorder.

Causes

Research to date has shown ADHD may be caused by a number of things:

  • Brain anatomy and function
  • Significant brain injury
  • Prematurity
  • Prenatal exposures, such as alcohol or nicotine from smoking

Treatment

In most cases, ADHD is best treated with a combination of behaviour therapy and medication. Coaching can be an effective practical intervention for ADHD. These treatments can relieve many of the symptoms of ADHD , but they don’t cure it. It may take some time to determine what works best.

If you believe that you, your child, or someone close to you is displaying signs of ADHD, reach out to a doctor or psychologist to ask about a potential diagnosis and start on the path to treatment.
